We are delighted to welcome Dr. Ralf Küppers professor at the Institute of Cell Biology

After studying biology at the University of Cologne from 1983-1989, Professor Küppers performed his Ph.D. studies in the group of Klaus Rajewsky (as Dr. rer. nat.), where he developed a method for the isolation and molecular analysis of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg-Reed cells, the tumor cells of classical Hodgkin lymphoma. In 1995, he set up his own research group. In 2000/2001, he stayed for a 6-months sabbatical at the Columbia University in New York with Dr. Riccardo Dalla-Favera. Since 2004, he is full professor of Molecular Genetics at the Institute of Cell Biology (Cancer Research), Medical Faculty, University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany.

Prof. Küppers fields of work are the development and differentiation of B lymphocytes in humans, the interaction of B lymphocytes with viruses, and the pathogenesis of B- and T-cell lymphomas, in particular Hodgkin lymphoma and CLL.

During this RedTalk, Prof. Küppers will describe our current understanding of the pathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma. This will include an update on the known genetic lesions in Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells, a discussion of microenvironmental interactions, of the role of CD30 in HRS cell pathophysiology, and of the role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma.

Last but not least, we are also pleased to welcome great moderators:

  • Pr. Christian Steidl Research Director of the Centre for Lymphoid Cancer at BC Cancer and Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia
  • Dr. Cédric Rossi, hematologist at the University Hospital Dijon-Bourgogne
