What are CAR T-cells?

DESCAR-T, National Registry for Patients with Hematological malignancies, Eligible for CAR T-Cell Therapy

What are CAR T-cells?

CAR T-cells” stands for Chimeric antigen receptor T-cells.

Based on the principle of treatment individualization, CAR T-cells are Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) and more precisely gene therapies that show great potential to treat some types of hematological malignancies. These therapies use cells that have been genetically modified to express a new receptor on their surface allowing to attack the cancer cells using the patient’s own immune system.

CAR T-cells represents a real hope in the treatment of some types of refractory or relapsed blood cancers.

How are CAR T-cells made?

The manufacturing process for this immunotherapy begins with the collection of a patient’s own T lymphocytes (or T-cells). This step is called leukapheresis. T-cells are white blood cells whose role is to identify and destroy any abnormal cell (e.g., cancer cells) or cells infected by foreign organisms (e.g., bacteria, viruses).

Once collected, and after a quality control, these T-cells are sent to a specialized laboratory to undergo a genetic modification in order to express a new chimeric protein at their surface. This chimeric protein is a particular receptor that will allow these modified T-cells to recognize and attack the cancer cells in the body, once these have been reinjected into the patient.

This is a personalized treatment for each patient to fight their cancer.

Qualified centers for the delivery of CAR-T treatment

In order to be able to offer this therapeutic option, healthcare facilities must be authorized to store and manipulate genetically modified cells, but also to take care of patients who have received these treatments that sometimes cause serious adverse reactions in the days following their administration.

Healthcare facilities willing to deliver CAR-T treatments to their patients must receive a specific qualification.

Currently, there are about 35 approved centers across France.
